Why is Puppy Socialization Important?

Between the ages of 8-12 weeks puppies go through a fear period. Using positive techniques to expose your puppy to new stimuli increases the likelihood that as your puppy matures, it will be more relaxed and confident when it encounters new events in its life. If your puppy missed this opportunity, it's not too late to take steps to properly socialize your dog.

Can you really teach an old dog new tricks?

Absolutely! The trick is to find the proper treat/reward that motivates the dog. Modifying or redirecting behavior is usually best initiated with a one-on-one evaluation and individual training classes.

I just adopted a dog, so how do I know what level of obedience to start?

We provide a great Bare Bones evaluation, but a good rule of thumb is that if your dog is over 4 months, he or she likely would start in Obedience

What can I do if my dog wasn’t properly socialized as a puppy?

Socialization is a critical component to a happy and confident dog. Our socialization training programs start out in your own back yard. We slowly build exposure to a variety of elements and then gradually move your dog to the front yard, down the street, etc. Depending on your dog’s breed and temperament, the time-tables for completing the socialization will vary.

My dog has anxiety when I leave. What should I do?

While most dogs have separation anxiety (vs containment issues), solving their insecurities require behavior modification and building up their confidence. This is done with specialized training (not obedience) and by going through games and drills with them to boost their confidence when you leave.

How do I get my new puppy socialized before they are fully immunized?

As a new owner, you should enroll in a socialization/headstart program as soon as your dog meets the vaccination requirements. In the meantime, you can:

  • Encourage friends and family to stop by and meet your puppy

  • Introduce your puppy to friends/family dogs that are confident and well-mannered

  • Take your puppy for rides in the car, ensuring you use a good safety harness
